Howdy, fellow Semi Homesteaders! Kyle here.

I just finished mowing a little while ago and was cleaning off the mower when I began to think about fall and what all I will need to do in the coming weeks.

Now, as much as Missy loves those “crisp fall nights” – she’s probably already brewing up some “Autumn One-Pan Meals” – for us semi-homesteaders, it’s also a clear signal: time to get to work! We’ve talked about DIYing with a speed square and tackling those pesky weeds, but as the seasons shift, our focus needs to shift too.

Winter’s coming, folks, and taking a bit of time now to button up the homestead can save you a whole heap of headaches later. Think of it as embracing those **old-fashioned skills** our grandparents knew – getting hands-on to protect our homes.

My next couple of posts will be about Homestead maintenance. This one will deal with outdoor things to do. The next will deal with indoor.

I have a Semi Homestead Maintenance Checklist for you below, covering essential tasks like making sure those gutters are clear to avoid ice dams, giving the roof a quick once-over for any damaged shingles, and sealing up any gaps around windows and doors to keep out drafts and critters. And don’t forget the garden tools! A bit of care for your mower now (draining the gas or adding stabilizer) means it’s ready to roll come “TAKE MY MONEY” season (aka Spring!). Trimming trees and shrubs, especially near the house and power lines, is another smart move after the leaves have fallen.

It’s all about striking that balance between modern life and old-fashioned skills. A little hard work now means a lot more simple joy (and fewer unexpected repairs!) when the snow starts flying. So grab your coffee, and let’s get that fall/winter prep done!

Clean gutters & downspouts – remove leaves/debris to prevent ice dams.

Inspect roof & flashing – check for damaged shingles or leaks.

Seal gaps & cracks – around windows, doors, and foundation (keep out drafts & pests).

Drain & store hoses – shut off outdoor spigots, drain hoses, and cover faucets.

Lawn & garden care – rake leaves, fertilize lawn, plant bulbs, mulch beds.

Service lawn equipment – clean mower, drain gas or add stabilizer, store properly.

Trim trees & shrubs – especially near the house and power lines.

Clean & store patio furniture – or cover if leaving outside.

Happy Fall and Lord bless

Kyle
