Alright, let’s talk tractors! As you know, Missy and I are deep in the planning stages for our barndominium and the whole Semi Homesteaders setup. And when you start thinking about a little land, one of the first things that comes to mind (after maybe chickens!) is a good, reliable tractor. So, I’ve been doing my homework, and I wanted to share some thoughts on one that has caught my eye: the Kubota BX23S.

Now, I’m not aiming to run a full-scale farm here, remember? We’re all about finding that balance. But having a capable machine for those bigger tasks around the property is definitely on the “must-have” list. And the Kubota BX Series, as a whole, seems to fit that bill, being touted as the #1 selling sub-compact tractor in the USA for over ten years. That’s got to mean something, right?

What really stands out about the BX23S to me is that it is a reliable, comfortable, and versatile with plenty of attachment options. For someone like me, just starting out and looking to tackle a variety of tasks, that sounds pretty good. Imagine the possibilities for tackling some serious landscaping, hauling cut wood, filling the raised beds, and of course, bush hogging.

This little powerhouse packs 21.6 gross engine horsepower and comes standard with 4WD and a smooth HST (Hydrostatic) Transmission. From all the research (yes, still watching those YouTube videos!), that HST transmission seems super user-friendly, which is a big plus for a relative newbie like me.

Another key feature that’s really appealing is the Swift-Connect attachments. The name says it all, right? It’s designed to easily go from the backhoe setup to using 3-point implements without needing a whole toolbox full of wrenches. Plus, it has some nice touches like a reversible seat for added comfort when you’re in backhoe mode, and even an optional mechanical thumb for grabbing and lifting things. That could be a real back-saver (if I decide to get that particular attachment) and I’m not getting any younger!

And of course, it’s not just about digging. The BX23S also features a Swift-Tach Loader. This makes attaching and detaching the front loader quick and easy, often without even leaving the operator’s seat. This is important because sometimes you need the loader for moving materials, and other times you might want it off for mowing to prevent ground compaction. It even has an optional 3rd function valve which opens up possibilities for attachments like grapples – something I can definitely see being useful down the line.

Kubota also emphasizes the reliability of the BX Series, highlighting their own Kubota-manufactured 3-cylinder diesel engine and the durable all-metal construction. That’s the kind of longevity and dependability we’re looking for in a big investment like this. They even boast about the comfort features, like a flat operating station and tilt steering, which would definitely be appreciated during those long workdays.

You can even get the BX Series, including the BX23S, with an optional dealer-installed cab that includes a heater, front LED work lights, and front windshield wipers. While the open ROPS model would probably be fine for a lot of our needs so I probably won’t be getting that.

So, while Missy and I are still in the dreaming and planning phase, the Kubota BX23S is definitely a strong contender for our future homestead. It seems to offer that right balance of capability, versatility, and user-friendliness that fits our semi-homesteading goals. What are your thoughts on sub-compact tractors? Have any of you had experience with Kubota? I’d love to hear your insights in the comments below!
