Hello There!
When I think about flowers, I can’t help but think about my Nanny.
Long before I ever dreamed of having a homestead, she was planting seeds in my heart that had nothing to do with vegetables and everything to do with seeing beauty in God’s creation.
Whenever she went to someone’s house, one of the things you could be certain that she’d do before leaving was head to the garden center together. My Nanny loved helping them pick out flowers for their porch or flower beds. She didn’t have her own home so this was her way of having MANY gardens to enjoy! She believed a few beautiful blooms could make a home feel warm and welcoming, and she loved being part of choosing them. Whether it was a hanging basket for the porch or colorful blooms for a flower bed, she believed flowers had a way of making a house feel more like a home. Looking back now, I realize she wasn’t just giving someone a plant. She was giving encouragement. She was reminding them they were loved and thought about!
Her favorite color was red, so it’s no surprise that red flowers always make me think of her. Even today, when I see bright red geraniums, petunias, or begonias, I can’t help but smile. It’s funny how God can use something as simple as a flower to bring back sweet memories of someone who shaped your life.
These days, when I’m planting flowers around our homestead, I can’t help but think of my Nanny. She may not have realized it, but she planted more than flowers in my life. She planted a love for God’s creation, and every time I see something blooming, I think of her. The more I learn about gardening, the more I’m amazed that God didn’t create a world that simply works. He created one that flourishes. He filled it with color, fragrance, texture, and purpose. Flowers don’t just make our gardens prettier—they remind us that our Heavenly Father delights in beauty.
“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good…” — Genesis 1:31
Whether you have acres of land or just a few pots on your porch, here are some beautiful plants that can bless your homestead in more ways than one.
1. Lemongrass
(One of my absolute favorites!)
Lemongrass isn’t just beautiful swaying in the garden—it has so many practical uses.
Many people enjoy using it in teas, soups, stir-fries, and homemade products. Its fresh citrus scent also makes it popular in natural cleaning recipes and homemade bug sprays. While no plant is a miracle solution, many gardeners also appreciate lemongrass for helping make outdoor spaces less inviting to mosquitoes.
Even if you never harvest a single stalk, it adds wonderful texture and beauty to a garden.
Lesson from the garden:
Just like lemongrass quietly serves many purposes, God often uses us in ways we don’t always see. A kind word, a prayer, or a simple act of service may have a greater impact than we realize.

2. Lavender
Lavender is one of those plants that almost everyone recognizes.
Its beautiful purple blooms attract bees and butterflies, while many people enjoy drying it for sachets, wreaths, soaps, and homemade gifts. It’s also a favorite for adding beauty and fragrance around the home.
Lesson from the garden:
Sometimes slowing down allows us to notice the beauty God has placed all around us.
3. Calendula
These cheerful orange and yellow flowers brighten any garden.
Calendula attracts pollinators and has long been valued in homemade salves and skin-care products. It also makes a beautiful edible garnish for salads.
It’s one of those flowers that’s both pretty and practical.
4. Echinacea (Purple Coneflower)
Besides being absolutely beautiful, coneflowers are loved by bees, butterflies, and birds.
Even after the flowers fade, birds often enjoy the seed heads during cooler months, making this a wonderful addition for supporting local wildlife.
5. Mint
Mint grows almost too well!
It’s wonderful in iced tea, desserts, fruit dishes, and homemade syrups. Many gardeners grow it in containers because it spreads quickly.
The fresh aroma is reason enough to grow it.
(Tip: Plant it in a pot unless you want mint everywhere!)
6. Rosemary
Rosemary is one of the hardest-working herbs in the garden.
It’s delicious on chicken, potatoes, vegetables, and homemade bread. It also attracts pollinators when flowering and adds evergreen beauty throughout much of the year.
Its wonderful fragrance makes it enjoyable just to brush against while walking through the garden.
7. Marigolds
If you’ve spent much time around gardeners, you’ve probably heard someone recommend marigolds.
Their bright blooms add cheerful color, attract pollinators, and are commonly planted alongside vegetables as part of a companion planting strategy.
Besides all that—they’re simply happy flowers.
8. Bee Balm
The name says it all.
Bee balm is a magnet for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Its bright blooms add incredible color while helping support the pollinators that our gardens depend on.
Watching hummingbirds visit bee balm never gets old.
9. Chamomile
These tiny daisy-like flowers are as sweet as they are useful.
Many people dry chamomile flowers to make herbal tea or use them in homemade gifts.
They bring a peaceful cottage-garden feel wherever they’re planted.
10. Sunflowers
Sunflowers may be one of God’s happiest creations.
They attract pollinators, provide seeds for birds, and create stunning backdrops for summer photos. Some varieties even produce edible seeds for people to enjoy.
Standing among sunflowers reminds me to always keep my face turned toward the Son.
More Than Just a Garden
As I learn more about gardening and homesteading, I realize God wasn’t just teaching us how to grow plants. He was teaching us about life.
Seeds require patience.
Flowers bloom in their own season.
Some plants serve quietly while others stand tall for everyone to see.
Each has a purpose.
Isn’t that true for us, too?
Sometimes we compare ourselves to someone else’s gifts, forgetting that God designed each of us with a unique purpose. Just as every flower has its place in the garden, every believer has a place in His Kingdom.
“Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.” — 1 Corinthians 12:27
So whether you’re planting herbs in a raised bed, growing flowers along a fence row, or simply tending a few pots on the porch, remember this:
Every seed is a reminder of the Creator.
Every bloom tells a story of His faithfulness.
And every garden quietly points us back to the One who makes all things grow.
