We are Americans! 🇺🇸 And let’s face it, Americans do everything BIG! If we’re honest, sometimes TOO big. We tend to overdo most things, whatever it may be.
Case in point, years ago I read about a particular tribe of American Indians and how they lived. I don’t remember the book but I know it was about Indians native to my area, Cherokee.
I remember how it talked about the fires they would build. Small fires. Fires that used a minimal amount of wood. Fires that were just large enough to accomplish the purpose they intended for it, whether that be for cooking or warming themselves or… you name it.
When I read that, I was forced to think about the fires I build. Fires when I camp or roast hot dogs, etc.
I was forced to acknowledge the fact my fires would put the Chicago fire of 1871 to shame. My 1-night camp fires burn enough wood to warm a family of 4 in Mongolia: for 8 days.
One could say the wood I use to roast hot dogs could have built a fair sized frigate.
That said, I am American and I am not immune to the overkill we tend to invoke.
At the same time, I am aware of it and TRY not to be wasteful. ….er, too wasteful.
Take our house we are building for instance. Our son has gone on to be with The Lord, therefore we have no children or grandchildren. No one coming to visit every weekend. No one needing an extra bedroom. No one needing closet space or a place in the living room to prop their feet.
Missy and I originally had planned for an 1800²’. We prayed about it. We listened. We THOUGHT we wanted 1800²’. We wanted to have room for overnight visitors. We wanted room for a big table for folks to gather round. We wanted, we wanted, we wanted.Â
But alas, we listened for answers to our prayers. We listened to The Holy Spirit. Wisdom won out and overkill was killed.
It’s just us. We may have overnight company twice a year, if that much. So 1500²’ it was and 1500²’ it is.
In the long run it will be better for keeping clean, better on energy usage, better on energy BILLS, better for Missy and me.
Americans. We want bigger, better, flashier. But that’s not always what’s good for us or what we really need.
How about you? What is your dream? Is it still viable or does wisdom cry out for something more… sensible?
Let us know.
Lord bless you and yours.
